The Right Equipment, Properly Prescribed

Assistive Technology & Equipment

Assistive technology (AT) refers to any device, piece of equipment, or system that helps you carry out daily activities more safely, independently, or comfortably. The right AT can transform what is possible in daily life; but getting it right requires a thorough assessment from an experienced occupational therapist.

What Can Assistive Technology Help With?

Assistive technology can support independence and safety across virtually every area of daily life. Common categories of AT that we assess and prescribes include:

  • Mobility aids: walking frames, wheelchairs, mobility scooters, powered wheelchairs
  • Bathroom and personal care equipment: shower chairs, commode chairs, raised toilet seats, bath boards
  • Bedroom and sleeping equipment: electric profiling beds, mattresses, over-bed tables
  • Transfer and hoist equipment: hoists, slings, slide sheets, transfer boards
  • Seating and postural support: specialised seating systems and pressure care equipment
  • Kitchen and meal preparation aids: adapted utensils, one-handed aids, appliances
  • Communication devices and environmental controls
  • Vehicle modifications and driver assessment referrals

The Assessment and Prescription Process

We conduct AT assessments in your home or another relevant environment. We take a thorough approach, considering your functional needs, your environment, your goals, and the evidence base for available equipment options.

For NDIS-funded AT, we can prepare the required OT report and supporting documentation in line with NDIA requirements. This includes quotes, equipment trials (where applicable), and justification of the prescribed item as the most appropriate solution for your needs. The level of reporting required varies depending on the AT support tier.

Funding for Assistive Technology

AT can be funded through:

  • NDIS: AT is funded under the Capital Supports budget. We can complete the OT assessment and prepare supporting reports for Low Cost, Mid Cost, and High-Cost AT.
  • Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA): We have significant experience prescribing AT for DVA clients under relevant DVA programmes.
  • HCP and Support at Home: AT may be available as part of your home care package or Support at Home plan.
  • Private funding: AT assessments and prescriptions are available to self-funded clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the NDIS cover all types of assistive technology?
The NDIS funds AT that is considered reasonable and necessary to support your disability-related needs. The level of evidence and reporting required depends on the cost and complexity of the equipment. We will advise you on what is required for your specific situation.

Can you help if my equipment needs have changed?
Yes. If your condition, function, or circumstances have changed and your current equipment is no longer appropriate, we can complete a reassessment and prepare updated documentation to support a change in your NDIS plan or a new equipment request.
