Functional Capacity Assessments

A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a comprehensive evaluation of how a disability or health condition affects your ability to carry out the daily tasks that matter to you. FCAs are one of the most important pieces of evidence used to determine the funding and supports you are entitled to under the NDIS.

At RT Speech and Hearing, our FCAs are conducted by our senior Occupational Therapist. Our occupational therapist is highly experienced in conducting FCAs that accurately represent the client’s functional capacity and ensuing therapy needs to make progress with the client’s NDIS goals. All components within our FCAs align with NDIA requirements for FCAs.

What Is a Functional Capacity Assessment?

An FCA examines how your disability or health condition affects your daily functioning across key areas of life. It goes beyond a diagnosis to understand the real-world impact on what you can and cannot do safely and independently.

During an FCA, we will assess your functioning across areas including:

  • Personal care and self-care routines
  • Mobility, transfers, and physical functioning
  • Domestic tasks and household management
  • Community access and participation
  • Cognitive functioning and self-management
  • Communication and social interaction
  • Safety and risk management in the home

We conduct FCAs in your home or community setting, ensuring the assessment reflects how you function day to day rather than in a clinical environment. You are welcome to have a family member, carer, support worker, or support coordinator present.

What Does an FCA Report Include?

Following the assessment, we prepare a detailed written report that documents your functional abilities and limitations, provides evidence-based recommendations for supports, and is written in line with NDIA reporting standards. Reports can include:

  • Support hours and level of daily living assistance required
  • Recommendations for assistive technology or equipment
  • Home modification recommendations
  • Justification for Supported Independent Living (SIL) or Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) applications
  • Evidence for NDIS access requests or plan reviews
  • Change of circumstances documentation

Who Should Consider an FCA?

An FCA may be recommended if you:

  • Are applying for access to the NDIS for the first time
  • Are coming up for an NDIS plan review or reassessment
  • Need to justify increased funding or a change in supports
  • Are applying for home and living supports, including SIL or SDA
  • Need documentation to support an assistive technology request
  • Have experienced a change in your condition, function, or circumstances

Funding for FCAs

Functional Capacity Assessments are funded through the Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living budget in your NDIS plan. If you are not yet on the NDIS, please contact us to discuss private funding options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an FCA take?
FCAs typically take between two and four hours for the home-based assessment component, depending on the complexity of your situation. Report writing is completed after the visit. We will give you a clearer indication of the timeline after the first appointment.

Do I need a referral to book an FCA?
No referral is needed. You can contact us directly, or your support coordinator or local area coordinator can make the referral on your behalf.

Can the FCA be done via telehealth?
While most FCAs are conducted in person in your home or community (which gives us the most accurate picture of your daily function), telehealth options are available in some circumstances. Contact our team to discuss your situation.
