Practical Changes That Help You Stay Safe and Independent at Home

Home Modifications

For many people, the ability to remain at home as health or mobility changes is a priority. The right home modifications can make an enormous difference to your safety, independence, and quality of life, whether you are recovering from surgery, living with a progressive condition, managing the effects of ageing, or working toward greater independence with a disability.

Our senior Occupational Therapist has specialised in home modifications assessment throughout her career. Drawing on nearly 30 years of experience across hospital discharge planning, community OT, and the Community Aids and Equipment Programme (CAEP), she brings a thorough, practical approach to identifying what changes your home needs and why.

What Are Home Modifications?

Home modifications are changes made to the physical structure or fittings of your home to improve accessibility, safety, and function. They range from minor additions to more significant structural changes and are always based on an individual assessment of your needs, your home, and your goals.

Modifications we commonly assess and recommends include:

  • Grab rails and handrails in bathrooms, toilets, hallways, and entry points
  • Ramps and threshold modifications for wheelchair or mobility aid access
  • Shower modifications, including roll-in showers and shower seats
  • Toilet and bathroom accessibility modifications
  • Kitchen modifications to support independence in meal preparation
  • Door widening for wheelchair access
  • Non-slip flooring and trip hazard removal
  • Lighting improvements for safety
  • Stair management, including stairlifts where appropriate
  • Smart home technology for environmental control

The Assessment Process

Our senior Occupational Therapist will visit your home to assess your current level of function, identify where difficulties or risks exist, and recommend modifications that are proportionate to your needs. We work closely with you and your family to ensure recommendations are practical, realistic, and aligned with your goals.

Following the assessment, we can prepare a written home modification report that supports your NDIS or DVA funding application, or provides recommendations for privately funded modifications.

Funding for Home Modifications

Home modifications can be funded through several pathways depending on your situation:

  • NDIS: Home modifications are a recognised support under the NDIS and can be funded through the Capital Supports – Home Modifications budget. We can prepare the OT report required to support your application.
  • Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA): We has extensive experience working within DVA and can assess and report on home modification needs for eligible veterans and their dependants.
  • HCP and Support at Home: We can assess modification needs for clients on Home Care Packages or the Support at Home programme.
  • Private funding: Home modification assessments are also available to self-funded clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you manage the actual installation of modifications?
Our role is to assess your needs, recommend appropriate modifications, and prepare any reports required to support funding. We work with you and your support coordinator (where applicable) to identify suitable builders and tradespeople to carry out the work. RT Speech and Hearing does not manage construction or installation directly.

Can I access home modifications through the NDIS without a plan?
You will need home modifications funding included in your NDIS plan. If this has not been allocated previously, we can complete an assessment that supports your case for funding to be included at your next plan review or change of circumstances request.
